NADA Unveils Name, Logo for National Child Safety Seat Campaign
McLean, Va., May 21, 2003 — The National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) unveiled a name and logo for its national awareness campaign on proper booster seat use: Boost for Safety: Give Kids a Lift for Life.

The campaign, a joint effort with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is designed to educate parents and children about the importance of booster seat use for children 40-80 pounds, or up to 4' 9" tall.

"Proper booster seat use can save lives," said NADA Chairman Alan Starling. "Franchised new vehicle dealers nationwide are committed to doing their part to ensure parents and kids hear that message through the Boost for Safety Campaign."

"Far too many children are placed prematurely in adult safety belts," said Jeffrey W. Runge, NHTSA administrator. "It is critical that all parents be alerted to the importance of appropriate booster seat use. We applaud NADA for helping spread this vital message."

NHTSA and other transportation safety research shows that the vast majority of parents are not aware their older children should be secured in booster seats.

Boosters are necessary to elevate these children to a height that keeps the shoulder belt where it is designed for safe travel - over their shoulders, rather than dangerously around their necks. Boosters also keep the lap belt low across the hips rather than higher on the abdominal area, which is more prone to internal and spine injuries in a crash.

NADA represents more than 19,700 new car and truck dealers, with over 43,000 separate franchises, both domestic and import.

(To receive a "Boost for Safety" logo by e-mail, please contact Jeff Beddow, jbeddow@nada.org or 703-821-7121. For more information on booster seat safety, please access www.nada.org/boostforsafety.)
