Cold
Mountain
An epic Civil War-era tale of love
and friendship, 'Cold Mountain' stars Oscar winners NICOLE KIDMAN and
RENÉE ZELLWEGER, and is set to storm theaters Christmas Day. In
the beloved-novel-turned-film, JUDE LAW also plays a wounded Confederate
soldier who embarks on a perilous journey to get back to his home, and
his love, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
It's not even out yet and Oscar hype is already surrounding the film,
but that's not the only thing causing a frenzy: The rock, bluegrass and
folk soundtrack also has everyone buzzing!
"To have the music playing," Jude Law says, "while you
are working in the background of a scene, it's as powerful as smelling
the grass if you are walking in a field. It's incredibly, powerfully emotive."
STING says he also jumped at the chance to be a part of the musical mix.
"I loved the book. When I heard there was a movie being made, I got
busy!"
The music for this film is a wonderful collection of traditional American
tunes, including blues, gospel, folk, and country. THE WHITE STRIPES frontman
JACK WHITE opens the soundtrack up with the lonely tune "Wayfaring
Stranger," and sings the blues on "Sittin' On Top Of The World."
The fiddle and banjo that accompany him are quite sprightly on "Christmas
Time Will Soon Be Over."
With melodies that could have been plucked from a White Stripes album,
"Never Far Away" rolls along with a mellow rock flow (Jack wrote
this one; all of the other tracks he performs on this soundtrack are covers).
Jack also has a role in the movie; it's his feature film debut!
Contemporary bluegrass star ALISON KRAUSS sings with a sweet sadness
on "The Scarlet Tide." The one and only STING wrote, composed
and sings backup vocals behind Alison on "You Will Be My Ain True
Love." Even with the spare instrumentation backing them up, their
vocal melodies are beautiful.
Other notable tunes include folk-singer TIM ERIKSON's traditional folk
tune ("Am I Born To Die?") and "The Cuckoo," a fast-paced
song on which Tim is joined by RILEY BAUGUS.
'Cold Mountain' hits theaters Christmas Day, and the soundtrack will
