E. Comprehensive Coverage
Very simply put, comprehensive coverage covers your vehicle for everything
other than a collision, such as fire, theft, vandalism, wind, hail, etc.
If you evaluate
your risk as outlined in the previous section on collision coverage, you
will make the
right choice for comprehensive coverage as well. The same holds true in
deciding
on higher or lower deductibles. However, with comprehensive coverage,
the cost
structure is different in that comprehensive coverage usually isn't as
expensive as
collision coverage. You will need to shop the cost of different deductibles
to discover
what works best for you.
Normally a $100 to $250 deductible makes sense; however, it will also
depend
on the value of your vehicle and the rate structure for where you live.
If you live in
an area that experiences a high rate of auto theft, you will find that
comprehensive
coverage will be more expensive than in a low theft area.
In some areas you can purchase a glass waiver with your comprehensive
coverage. Simply put, this is a rider attached to your policy that waives
the
comprehensive deductible if any glass is broken on the vehicle. This coverage
not
only covers windshields, but all windows, headlights and tail lights as
well. If you are
interested in this option and it is available in your state, you would
want to evaluate
the cost of this optional glass coverage versus the amount of your deductible
and
how often you might have a glass loss. In some areas where glass breakage
is a
problem, it's a good idea to carry this coverage. You must remember, however,
that
your comprehensive coverage will cover a glass loss above the deductible.
You are
only buy ing back the deductible with the glass waiver.
When considering dropping comprehensive coverage, you should use the
same guidelines as outlined in the collision coverage section.
